Location
Zhengbeitai Tower was built in 1607 during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It was built for the protection of the Hongshan Market Place. The market was the junction where the Mongols and the Hans met to trade. Zhenbeitai Tower stands on the Mount Hongshan, five kilometers north of Yulin City.
The First tower of the Great Wall
Zhengbeitai Tower is a four storied tower, square in shape. It measures 320 meters around its base and is 30 meters high. The four levels decreases in size towards the top. Each storey is connected with a staircase which helped the soldiers to ascend the top. There was a watch shed at the top of the tower from where the guards used to send and receive signals. But this collapsed during the Qing period. Since then the tower has been restored and it is known as "The First tower of the Great Wall".
The Zhengbeitai Tower is a great tourist attraction since climbing to the top provides visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding hills. The other protection for market trading places during the Ming dynasty were two small fortresses near Zhen Bei Tai which are also ruins because of constant weathering.
