Small Square City renamed Yumenguan Pass
Yumenguan Pass(Jade gate Pass) was also known as "Small Square City". According to the Chinese legends, Small Square City of the Gansu province was situated in a very complex terrain.It was surrounded by swamps, valleys and forests. Traders had to pass through this place to transport jade and other precious stones. It was often that traders with their caravans lost their way here.
To mark the area a jade was stuck on the gate which guided the traders during the night. With this guide, caravans passing this post never got lost. From then on, the Small Square City was changed into Yumenguan Pass (Jade Gate Pass).
Location
Yumenguan Pass is located a hillock 90kms northwest of Dunhuang city. It is an important pass of the north route on the Silk Road. Silk and tea from Central China were exported abroad through this pass in exchange of fruits and religious and cultural views.
The present city was constructed with rammed earth. It has two gates respectively in its west and north directions. The wall is 10 meters high and its top is 3 meters wide and bottom is 5 meters wide.
