Location
Yanmenguan Pass is one of the outer three passes along the Great Wall of China, the other two being, Ningwuguan Pass and Pianguan pass). The pass is located on the Yanmen Mountain, northwest of Dai County. The Tang dynasty (618-907) had originally built The Yanmenguan Pass and was later rebuilt by the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
The exact location of the Yanmenguan Pass is on the summit of the Yanmen Mountain. It can be accessed only through an ancient trail which winds up between cliffs. It is known for its strategic importance and in1374, Ji'an Marquis Lu Heng, of the Ming dynasty moved the Yanmenguan Pass some kilometers to the north and built a city in its original place.
The brick-stone wall of the castle of the Yanmenguan Pass rises to 6 meters and is 1 kilometer in circumference. Originally there were gates on the east, west and north.
Yanmenguan pass is open to the tourists but there remains only some part of the arched gates and a pair of stone lions, a couple flag posts and a few stone steles.
