The Yan State was built from a small province to a powerful state. With the succession of Emperor Yan Zhaowang, he brought in some major changes to run his kingdom. He incorporated outstanding people to his coterie after a nation wide search for them and handed out important portfolios to them. This slowly made Yan a strong and stable state in the northern region of China.

Location

Bordered by the Qi State in the south, the Zhao, on the west and the Han on the northeast, Yan State was constantly bothered by the aggressive minorities in the north- Linhu, Donghu, and Loufan.

Northern Wall of Yan State
To guard against the continuous invasion of the neighboring Donghu, Loufan and Linhu the Yan State built a wall by the Yanshan Mountain Range to the north in the year 290 B.C. The Wall of the Yan State commenced from present Huailai County of Hebei province, crossed the Luanhe river, extended to the northeast, went over the Liaohe river and terminated in present Liaoyang of Liaoning Province. The Wall of the Yan State ran about 500 kilometer in total length. It was the last of the walls built during the Warring States Period.

Yishui Wall
With Yan overpowering the Qi State and fearing a reciprocal attack from Qi, it strengthened its frontiers by extending the banks of the river Yishui River into a wall. It is called the Yishui Wall. It stretched about 250 kilometers (155 miles). Built from 334BC to 311BC, the Wall comprised of two portions. The first part commenced from the present Yixian County of Hebei Province, went along the Yishui River, crossed through Dingxing County and steered to the southeast. The second started from Xushui County of Hebei Province, went towards the northeast and finally met the first part. It took a turn to the southeast and arrived at about 10 kilometers southeast to Renqiu of Hebei province.
