The land of Jing was inhabited by the native Chu people. Chu was a successful expansionist and military state in the early years.Later it developed a reputation for coercing and absorbing its allies.The first part of the Great wall of China was built by the Chu state. It was named as "the Rectangle Wall". It was built along the northeast and northwest frontier in 656 B.C.
It ran to a total length of 1000km to prevent the intrusion from the neighboring Qin, Qi, Han and Jin states. The sites now included the Lushan and Yexian Counties of Pingdingshan City, Wugang City, Fang cheng and the Nanzhao Counties of Nanyang City in Henan Province.
There are several features about the Wall of Chu State. According to historical facts the northern border was circumscribed by numerous cites like army camps and watch houses. These cities were later developed into the wall. These boundary markers were eventually to be built into the Great Wall.
