On a trip to Yulin, it has been found that the desertification of the area is very grave. Although a forestation programme has been carried out, over the past two decades, sands drifting in the winds from Mao Wu Su Desert to the north continue to cause devastation, particularly in the season of spring. Much of the broken Wall has been masked by sand and the only clue to its position is the speckled beacon towers.
Images of the excavations indicate clearly how this once grand fortress had been completely lost under the sand. While the effects of nature are measured and may take effect over a quite prolonged phase, the conscious destruction by man could totally diminish the Wall in a very short span. Some sites of destruction have also raised the question whether it is right that the new should be built from the old.
