Old Dragon Head
The starting point of the Great Wall which is five kilometers to the east of Shanhaiguan dips into the sea like a dragon's head. While it dips 20 meters into the sea, it is piled up 10 meters high where the surging waves beat against the rocks, resembling a dragon's head. Hence the name Old Dragon Head. The Jinglu platform, the South sea pass, and the Chenghailou Tower and the Ninghai Castle are in a strong fortification there which add up to the structure.
The Old Dragon Head was constructed during the Ming Dynasty between the years 1368 to 1644. Old Dragon's Head (Laolongtou) is the eastern end of the Wall. It got its name from the dragon like head which was stone carved and faced the sea. The original structure had long ago broke down and has been replaced by a replicate of the original. The Changtai Tower and the Temple of the Sea Goddess was initially built in 1579 but was later rebuilt into replicas of soilders adorning the costume of the Oing Dynasty.
