Chinese New Year 1977 was the year of Snake. In traditional China, dating methods were based on lunar calendar. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cyclical dating that is governed by the track record of the new moon. An accepted folk method which reflected this cyclical method of recording years is the Twelve Animal Signs. Every year in the calendar is represented by an animal name or sign according to a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Hence, every twelve years the same animal name or sign would reappear. The year of snake is a year for reflection, preparation and searching answers. It is also believed to be a great time for shrewd dealings, political business and takeovers. People tend to scheme and ponder over matters before acting on them. The wisdom of the Snake becomes evident in many facets of our life, particularly in those which requires careful thinking. The year of the Snake is always unpredictable, if we look back into history; we find that the year of the Snake has never been smooth and tranquil. It may be because it is the strongest negative force in the cycle and it comes after the Dragon year, which is the strongest positive one. |
